Chimpanzee Tracking Safari Kibale National Park

Kibale Forest National Park is one of the most attractive National Parks in Uganda with varied tracts of tropical rain forest with vast woodlands and savannah. The park covers 795 km2 of rain forest, swamps, rivers and few areas of grassland. It is home to more than 1,500 chimpanzees protected inside the park and in total thirteen primate species. Kibale forest is the best place to track Chimpanzee in the World and to this it’s referred to as the “Primate Capital”. Children have to be 15 years and above to able to track the Chimpanzees, if you have children below 15 years they can engage in an educative forest walk.


There are 2 times for trekking opportunities per day i.e. morning or afternoon. You are allowed to stay with the chimps for a maximum of one hour after locating them. This tour has an option for the Chimpanzee Habituation experience which involves tracking the chimps with researchers with a greater chance of seeing rare behaviors of chimps like hunting.

Day 1

Depart Kampala for Kibale Forest National Park

Transfer from Kampala to Kibale National Park Your tour guide will pick you from your hotel in Kampala at 7 am, to begin your trip to the Kibale Forest national park, the primate capital of the world. The drive from Kampala to Kibale Forest National Park lasts for about 4hours. You will continue to Fort Portal town via Mubende where you will have your Lunch. Fort Portal is one of the most beautiful towns in Uganda. Once you arrive to your Lodge you will be taken for a community walk in the Bigodi swamp. Bigodi wetland is one of the best places to see birds in Uganda. It also hosts several primates and creatures like the swamp Antelope (Sitatunga), Bush bucks, Mongoose, Bush pigs and Otters. The Bigodi swamp is home to the Papyrus Gonolek, Hornbills, Weaver birds, Waxbills, Kingfishers, Cuckoos, Fly catchers and the Great Blue Turraco.

Day 2

Wake up early and ensure you take heavy breakfast in preparation for a long day of activities. Your driver guide will transfer you to the briefing place right after breakfast, you will then be allocated to a chimpanzee community and your ranger guide will lead you on the trek in search of this great ape. Chimpanzee tracking is Kibale National Park is more predictable compared to Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park. An advance team is sent to locate them before letting the lead ranger know using a radio call. Chimpanzee tracking takes three to four hours depending on the location of a particular group you are assigned. Watch the chimpanzees in their natural habitat, as they swing from the branches in the canopy high above the forest floor, feed, play and rest.


In the afternoon, after this experience you will take a village walk that will lead you to the Coffee experience, banana bear making, basket making and traditional healer.

Day 3

Departure / Return to Kampala

Departure/ Return to Kampala Early breakfast, check out where you will embarking on your return journey to Kampala with a stopover in Mubende where you will have lunch, look out for the rugged hills, tea plantations, local farms of Ankole cattle and peasants working on their gardens. Then drive to Kampala and transferred to Entebbe International airport for your onward flight.
